Run IE6 Line-of-Business Applications
in IE8 with UniBrows

Avoid cost and complexity, simplify migrations

Upgrade your business to Windows 7, or to Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP, while maintaining compatibility with all of your Internet Explorer 6-based web applications—without changing a single line of code.

With UniBrows, your organization will enjoy:

  • Compatibility with the IE6-based web apps you’ve already deployed and paid for
  • Easy deployment and management, unlike virtualization solutions
  • Simple migration today, then replace your aging apps when you’re ready
  • Greater security and ease of use because IE6 only renders the sites you choose
  • Granular control over ActiveX controls and registry settings for all web apps, even modern ones running in IE8
  • The end of your IE6 headaches and the eternal thanks of web developers everywhere

Sysinternals Live lets users launch Sysinternal tools directly from the Web without having to manually download them. Simply enter a tool’s Sysinternals Live path into Windows Explorer or a command prompt. For example:

http://live.sysinternals.com/{tool name}

or

\\live.sysinternals.com\tools\{tool name}

You can view the entire Sysinternals Live tools in an FTP-like directory within your browser and instantly download listed utilities. Links on the home page give you an expressway to six categories of tools: File and Disk Utilities, Networking Utilities, Process Utilities, Security Utilities, System Information Utilities, and Miscellaneous Utilities.

Connect with HTTPS voor Live.com

Using HTTPS will help keep your account secure from hackers-especially if you commonly use public computers or unsecure wireless connections.

Important note: Turning on HTTPS will work for Hotmail over the web, but it will cause errors if you try to access Hotmail through programs like:

  • Outlook Hotmail Connector
  • Windows Live Mail
  • The Windows Live application for Windows Mobile and Nokia

If you only need a temporary HTTPS connection, enter “https” in front of the web address instead of “http”.

  • Use HTTPS automatically (please see the note above)
  • Don’t use HTTPS automatically

Save   Cancel

How-to: Connect Your SkyDrive In Windows Explorer

Your web drive SkyDrive offers 25 GB of free storage that you can use from everywhere.  However, uploading and accessing its contents from your web browser can get tiring.  Unless you connect Windows Live SkyDrive to Windows Explorer.

After going through the following how-to, you will be able to access your SkyDrive folders from a mapped network drive, e.g. drive “S:\”.  You do not need any extra software to do this.

  1. Open your browser, and navigate to http://skydrive.live.com/.
  2. Sign in with your Windows Live ID.
  3. Copy the UID part of the displayed URL, like:https://cid-1234567890abcdef.skydrive.live.com/ .
  4. Leave SkyDrive open, and take note of one of your folder names.
  5. Open Windows Explorer.
  6. On the left sidebar, right-click on Network.  Choose Map network drive.
  7. Enter the following URL: \\docs.live.net@SSL\1234567890abcdef\XYZ
  8. Replace “XYZ” with the folder name you noted and that you want to map.
Note: Replace “Documents” with “^2Documents”, and “Public” with “^2Public”.
  9. Choose a drive letter, and submit the dialog.
  10. You will be prompted for your Windows Live ID.  Sign in.
  11. Then, you can access all the files and subfolders within your SkyDrive folder, including copying and pasting.  You can even open and edit files directly!

Beetje gedult dus.

Q. What’s Microsoft P2V Migration for Software Assurance?

Mijn eerste blog publish vanaf Live Writer 2011 naar WordPress omdat Live Spaces hiernaar is gemigreerd.

A. Many organizations are looking at migrating from Windows XP (and Vista) to Windows 7, and one challenge can be application compatibility with Windows 7. There are several solutions for application compatibility, including application shims, updating the applications, and Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V, the enterprise version of XP Mode with centralized management and image distribution). Sometimes solutions like MED-V might not be available, though, and the entire XP desktop, including profile, applications, and data, just needs to be made available under a new Windows 7 OS.

Microsoft has released a beta of Microsoft P2V Migration for Software Assurance, a solution built on the disk2vhd Sysinternals tool and the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (which can also integrate with SCCM). The solution:

· Captures the entire XP (or later) desktop to a VHD.

· Deploys the new Windows 7 OS.

· Restores the XP VHD and related hotfixes for full XP Mode functionality (including RemoteApp fixes).

· Integrates the VM into the Windows 7 start menu so the applications that are installed in the XP OS show on the Windows 7 Start menu.

You can launch the applications that are installed in XP seamlessly from the Windows 7 Start menu, and the applications run on the Windows 7 desktop instead of a separate XP desktop. You can also elect to see the entire Windows XP desktop. You have a complete legacy OS environment running alongside your new Windows 7 environment.

It should be noted that this should be treated as a solution for particular cases and not a normal migration solution. You’re capturing the entire Windows XP environment, which means you may end up with a VHD that’s 50-80GB. In contrast, MED-V deployed XP images may only be 2GB. MED-V also has functionality that allows automatic URL redirection to the IE6 running in a MED-V-provided XP image, which isn’t possible using the standard XP Mode functionality that this P2V migration solution relies on. So when would you use it?

· You have users that have highly customized Windows XP environments and configurations that can’t risk any disruption to their own environment.

· Your XP installations have software for which the install media is no longer available, or have region-specific versions that can’t be deployed centrally.

The solution can be downloaded from Microsoft. Once the P2V migration is installed on your Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) or System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) box, there will now be extra scripts available. During the installation, extra tools, such as disk2vhd and hotfixes, are downloaded, ready for integration with the new task sequences.

The P2V process relies on the new ZTIRetro.wsf script, which has both /STATECAPTURE and /STATERESTORE modes that are used to capture and restore the XP legacy environment. Several scripts are added to MDT (and to SCCM through MDT integration) to automatically capture and restore using the P2V capabilities. However, you can add the P2V capabilities to other task sequences/templates by copying the command used to capture/restore. You get the command by looking at the Capture and Restore VHD tasks in the P2V-provided templates.

There’s a great video at on TechNet that talks more about the P2V Migration solution.

View your spaceView your space
